BBC offers Jonathan Ross £18 million

June 12, 2006

Jonathan RossAccording to the Evening Standard the BBC has offered Jonathan Ross an £18 million pay package to stay at the Beeb. I've never had a problem with paying the TV-license fee but if this is what my money is going to I may have to rethink my stand on it. He's not worth that kind of money for making the same obscene jokes week after week. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a prude or anything, it's just that he's become a stuck record. Never moving on …

The Shield Gets One More Season

June 7, 2006

Michael ShiklisDigital Spy is reporting that the brilliant show The Shield has been extended to a seventh season by FX Networks. If this is true it is fantastic news as this is one of the best TV-shows I've ever seen, almost on par with Battlestar Galactica!

Getting the Root Node of a DOMDocument in PHP

June 7, 2006

Had some trouble looking this one up online, finally cracked it though …

$doc = new DOMDocument('1.0');
$doc->loadXML("<root><test>Hello World!</test></root>");
$rootNode = $doc->documentElement;

… simple enough in hindsight. Just a had trouble finding documentElement in the manual!

Danger, No Unauthorized Access

June 6, 2006

A photo I took this morning while waiting for the train at Elmers End station. Posting it here as a test of flickr's blog this feature. Which didn't work too well, kept adding CSS tags as text. Oh well, may need to play around with a bit more.

2 Pads No More

June 1, 2006

John PrescottJohn Prescott has taken a "personal decision" (yeah right) to give up his grace-and-favour home Dorneywood. Will this save his career? Doubt it. I think the public will see this as too little too late … it's time to get rid of the biggest waste of space in government today …

No More Diving

May 31, 2006

During last night's England match against Hungary Steven Gerrard was awarded a penalty by allegedly diving. I can't comment on whether he actually dived or not as the first half was so boring I fell asleep and woke up just as Lampard was about to take the penalty. However, Ian Wright (one of the BBC commentators) stated that "Other teams will do it against us, so why don't we?" …. hum, just because others do it doesn't make it right! It's disgusting, unsportsmanlike conduct which should be driven out of the game! Help do it by signing the Kick Diving Out of Football petition.

Pocketchange Fines

May 31, 2006

Yesterday the FA fined Chelsea for failing to control their players during the match at Fulham in March. Whilst I totally agree with the fine, the amount is appaling … £10,000! Pocketchange for a club like Chelsea FC … if the FA wants to use fines to improve the behavious of players (and coaches) they need to make them substantially more. The fines they are handing out these days are only symbolic, they don't make any difference to the clubs … (and while they're at it, introducing a salary cap wouldn't be such a bad idea …) …
